Welcome once again, my lovelies! Oh, Lola has been on a roll lately! I’ve gotten my soft little hands on a few slim bullets, got a full-body massage at my favorite spot, and now I get to do what I love doing most – titillating you with some sultry prose of pleasure pieces. Wink.
Now, you all know how kinky Richard, Scarlett, Vlad, and yours truly can get. We love ourselves some sultry, sweet sex toys. In fact, Richard and Scarlett love it so much that they have entire toy chests dedicated to them, for men and women alike. And more often than not, you cuties will spot some familiar brand names. Some of you like Lelo, others prefer Lovense, and a few may enjoy a We-Vibe or two.
I understand your devotion, my lovelies. But have you considered thinking outside of the box?
You see, while there are plenty of brands out there that make excellent vibrators, cock rings, and dildos, sometimes it pays to do it all yourself. Sometimes, cutie, you’ll want to build your own sex toy.
But how would you do it, and why? Well, join your friendly Lola, and we’ll figure that out together, alright? Wink.
It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time: Why Personalize and Customize Sex Toys?
In the early 2020s, creating a custom DIY sex toy is almost a fad. Honestly, I met a few of my lovely friends for brunch a few days ago, and they were all comparing notes! I was the only little lady without a custom dildo, vibrator, or something similar.
But I asked around. I had to know why so many of you sweethearts aim to please yourself with the product of your own handiwork. No, no, that’s not the handiwork I had in mind (well, I did a little bit; Lola does write about sex, after all). Anyway, why do people craft their own sex tools? Here are some of the answers I kept getting.
I’m a Little Short on Cash, Sir. Can I Do Something Else for You?
You’ve seen the stunning pieces that my friends Richard and Scarlett use, right? You’ve seen that Lovense Ferri or that Tenga Flip Zero.
What am I saying? Of course, you did. You sweet, sweet readers are always so diligent and mindful! That’s why I enjoy scribbling for you.
But you surely must have noticed the price tag of these devices. They aren’t exactly cheap. More often than not, they cost hundreds of dollars, and that’s not counting maintenance, additional materials like lube, or the costs of repairs. In fact, very few businesses out there even do sex toy repairs, so you might end up doing that yourself if they do break.
So, why spend hundreds of dollars on a toy when you can work your magic and create one for a fraction of the cost? At least, that’s what quite a few of you lovelies told me.
My Baby Is One of a Kind!
I often get sentimental for items that mean a lot to me. For example, I still have that cute necklace that Vlad made for me during that weekend in Tallahassee. I got him a cute little plug in return. Wink.
That sentimentality comes from the fact that the item I had was, and still is, one of a kind. Some people actually want that – they want a dildo or a sleeve that’s shaped like the naughty bits of their significant other. In other words, they want a unique piece of sensual equipment because it makes them feel special in more ways than one.
Oooh, Well, When You Put It THAT Way…
I think the most fun answers I got were from my amazing gay and bisexual friends. ‘Lola, it’s a chance for me to enter myself,’ one dude I know told me over coffee. ‘I like the idea of tasting myself, but taking it to another level,’ this amazing lady I know said when I asked her. In short, it’s a bit of a kink. And you guys and gals know Lola – I respect all kinks. Wink.
Going (and Giving) Ahead in Life
Amazingly, a few of my friends stated that their reason has almost nothing to do with pleasure. For example, a couple I hang out with on Sundays actually started making custom toys just because they felt like learning a new craft. To them, it’s kind of like pottery or smartphone repair. Genuine curiosity is what brought them to make sex toys, and I actually felt proud of their dedication.
Let’s Talk Business
I’ll stick to the same couple, my lovelies, if you don’t mind. Not only did they find a new passion together (and deepened their other passion along the way), but they also founded a small, local startup creating custom dildos. It just goes to show you that creating toys for pleasure can be quite profitable. I’ll cover that in just a bit, right after this humble little tip, my lovelies.
💡 PRO TIP: A lot of people ask me if ‘custom’ or ‘DIY’ toys refer to everyday objects used instead of dildos and vibrators. And while I did write an article on that topic, that’s not what custom toys are. With that out of the way, you can definitely use these objects if the sex toy you want to buy is too expensive or if you aren’t confident in making your own.
Modern Tech Makes Lola Tingly: 3D Printing and Sex Toys
Oh, I know what you might be thinking, my beautiful readers. Is Lola going to talk about those ladies who were interviewed by CNBC in 2015? Well, no. I’m sure they are lovely ladies, but I’m here to talk about a more DIY approach to custom toys. The approach where you will require 3D printing tech. And more importantly, the approach that every single one of you lovelies can pull off.
Don’t fear innovation. Embrace it the right way, and in due time, it will embrace you.
Pause, Honey, and Consider the Following…
But whoa, there, cowboy (and cowgirl)! Don’t rush out and buy a 3D printer just yet. Before you do, Lola has to give you a fair warning or two. So, hear me out:
- Nearly all 3D print materials are either dangerous for sexual stimulation or just not hygienic enough for insertion;
- With how they’re printed, the objects might cause friction and even tearing when utilized;
- Washing a 3D-printed sex toy is difficult and may not give the best results;
- Print material can even be brittle and break after one or two uses.
Whatever you do, my sweet ones, do not print out a solid toy and test it. Instead, pay attention to what your cute friend Lola’s about to share.
This Is How We Do It
Nearly every guide, how-to article, and DIY video states the same basic list of steps. Here’s a brief rundown for you, babes:
- Design the toy (you can find the appropriate software for that purpose);
- Make a digital 3D model to see what it will look like;
- Turn the model into a mold;
- Design the mold so it splits in two, with registration nobs and wedges;
- Print the mold out;
- Smooth the mold with wax;
- Cast the toy using body-safe material (I recommend silicone);
- Break open the mold and get the toy out;
- Trim any excess silicone with either scissors or a pocket knife.
The cool thing about 3D molds is that you can literally make scores of toys, all of them with different colors, designs, and even textures. In my book, that’s a winning combo.
✍️ Lola Lovegood recommends: When making a custom toy, treat the process carefully as if you were making a high-tier product. Make something that will go in, as well as come out, without any obstructions. Also, use safe materials and avoid “experimentation”. Remember to think smart, not horny.
Making It All Go Smooth: Creating Custom-Made Lube
In researching this topic, I’ve had a moment of realization: my lovelies need to be as safe as possible across the sexual board. And what adds to safety when having fun? Lubrication, of course! Wink.
Now, all of us from Pleasure Me Now will advise buying lots of lube just to be safe. Luckily, it’s an item that is easily found in most specialized shops, online, and in regular retail. But what if I told you that you can make your own lube?
The best recipe for water-based lube I’ve found is the following:
- Get 1 cup of water;
- Mix in 4 teaspoons of cornstarch;
- Place it in a saucepan and keep the heat low to medium;
- Wait until the mixture starts boiling;
- Stir frequently for about 30 seconds;
- Remove from the stove;
- Let the mixture cool until it’s safe to apply to the skin.
The cool bit about this DIY lube is that it doesn’t require any condoms. It’s safe, sleek, and good to go!
A DIY Delight: Lola’s Final Thoughts
Looking at the whole phenomenon of customizable, personalized toys, I can’t help but see it as incredibly beneficial. As I said before, I love items that are unique, and if that item happens to be a dildo or a plug, it will only grow in value to me. After all, I’m using it for an intimate, pleasurable act, so it will hold a lot of significance to me.
But that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with store-bought toys, cuties! If you can afford a good stimulator or a neat set of pumps, by all means, go for them. Personally, I prefer to see my readers happy and pleased. Whether it’s a custom dildo or a branded one, as long as it makes your knees shake and your goosebumps flare up, it’s a toy worth owning, love.
FAQ
While there are branded sex toys made out of these materials, I still recommend against it. After all, brands know how to smooth these materials to reduce friction and potential scrapes.
Some of them, yes. A lot of brands, both small startups and industry giants, create their fun toys from eco-friendly materials.
Oh, I’m not telling. Wink.
